In a recent news, Rohit Sharma will miss the opening Test match of the much-anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. The Indian skipper will sit out due to personal reasons as he and his wife, Ritika Sajdeh, recently welcomed their second child. However, according to reports, he is expected to rejoin the squad in Adelaide before the start of the second Test.
Rohit To Play Warm-Up Game Ahead Of Second Test
Despite his absence in the series opener, Rohit Sharma is set to play a crucial warm-up match to regain his form ahead of the pink-ball Test in Adelaide. According to a recent report by ESPNCricinfo, Rohit has already informed the BCCI of his travel plans and has confirmed his availability for the two-day pink-ball warm-up game against the Australian Prime Minister's XI.
The warm-up fixture is scheduled to begin on November 30, less than a week before the day-night Test in Adelaide. This practice match will provide crucial match practice for Rohit, especially given the challenges posed by the pink ball under lights in Australian conditions
With Rohit unavailable for the first Test, vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah will step in to lead the Indian side in Perth.
Shubman Gill’s Injury Woes Add To India’s Selection Conundrum
India’s selection dilemmas have been further compounded by the injury to Shubman Gill, who fractured his thumb while batting in an intra-squad match at the WACA in Perth. Gill's injury is likely to rule him out of the first Test, leaving India without two of their mainstay batters.
KL Rahul and Abhimanyu Easwaran are currently the frontrunners to replace Rohit and Gill at the top of the order. It is also important to note that, the team management has asked left-handed batter Devdutt Padikkal to stay back in Australia with the squad.
It is also important to mention that, the upcoming series against Australia is not just another bilateral series for India as it holds significant implications for their WTC campaign. Currently Rohit Sharma and his team is trailing in the WTC standings.
To make things better, India needs to win four out of the five Tests against Australia to secure a spot in the final. It will be a challenging task against a formidable Australian side, especially on their home soil.
