Young Indian opener Abhishek Sharma clattered 79 runs from just 34 balls against England in the series-opening first T20I match at the Eden Gardens. The dynamic left-hander smeared five boundaries and eight sixes in his thunderous knock to set up India’s emphatic seven-wicket victory with more than seven overs to spare.

After the match, the youngster credited former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh as well as Brian Lara and Daniel Vettori for instilling him with creative inputs and confidence.

Abhishek credits yesteryear greats for heroic knock

While speaking during the post-match press conference, Abhishek Sharma credited former Punjab cricketer and Indian World Cup-winner Yuvraj Singh for his inputs in batting. Moreover, the 24-year-old also expressed his gratitude towards former West Indies captain Brian Lara and legendary New Zealand spinner Daniel Vettori for providing valuable assistance, especially during their coaching gigs at the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

As quoted by the Hindustan Times, Abhishek Sharma said:

“I believe I’m very lucky in this. I was working with Yuvi paaji [Yuvraj Singh] at first. Going forward, I had Brian Lara, who really helped me at SRH. Moving forward, Daniel Vettori was pretty simple, he just wanted everyone to express themselves, and I think that gave me the freedom to play my shots. So obviously, with Yuvraj Singh, Brian Lara, and even Gauti bhai right now, they just want me to showcase my talent the way I play and to back myself.”

Abhishek Sharma made his international debut for Team India back in July 2024 during a T20I series in Zimbabwe, shortly after the conclusion of the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup. The youngster was included into the travelling squad following his explosive IPL 2024 season with the bat, where he bludgeoned 484 runs from 16 innings at an exceptional strike rate of 204.21.
