Durbar Rajshahi consigned table-toppers Rangpur Riders to their first defeat of the BPL 2024-25 season, doing so in match number 31 of the tournament at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram. Yasir Ali defied Riders’ bowlers with a turbulent half-century before bowlers Ryan Burl and SM Meherob picked up crucial wickets in the run-chase.

Durbar Rajshahi opener Mohammad Haris belted four boundaries in his 12-ball knock of 19 at the top of the order during his 24-run partnership with Sabbir Hossain. While Haris fell to a trap laid out by Rangpur Riders spinner Rakibul Hasan in the third over, Hossain became his team’s aggressor by crafting 52 runs for the second wicket with Anamul Haque.

Sabbir launched three sixes and boundaries to race to 39 from just 19 deliveries. However, Pakistan star Khushdil Shah tilted the tide back in Rangpur Riders’ favor with the successive wickets of the well-set Rajshahi opener and that of Zimbabwean cricketer Ryan Burl.

After slipping to 76-3 in 7.3 overs, the Durbar Rajshahi reached the 100-run mark around the 11th over of the innings.

Yasir Ali at number five restructured the Durbar Rajshahi innings with a sequence of two boundaries and six extraordinary sixes. The middle-order batter muscled 60 runs from just 32 balls to blaze the Rajshahi past the 150-run mark inside 16 overs.

However, Ali’s dismissal to Khushdil Shah (3-31) dried up the runs for the Rajshahi, as they managed to conjure just 18 runs from their final four overs of the innings. For the Rangpur Riders, Akif Javed picked up three wickets in the space of just five balls to snare figures of 3-23. Nahid Rana also claimed a wicket as the Durbar Rajshahi reached 170-9 by the completion of their 20 overs.

Defending 171, Durbar Rajshahi off-spinner SM Meherob cleaned up Rangpur Riders opener Steven Taylor for just four, and removed dangerman Iftikhar Ahmed for a first-ball duck. Senior paceman Taskin Ahmed, however, delivered the opening breakthrough for the Rajshahi with the wicket of Irfan Sukkur in the first over of the run-chase, as the Riders had its top-order obliterated at 15-3.

Well-set batters Khushdil Shah (14 off 13) and Saif Hassan (43 off 29) also failed to capitalize on their starts as they were accounted by Sabbir Hossain and Shafiul Islam respectively as the table-toppers reached a sluggish 74-5 in nine overs.

Ryan Burl prevented late Rangpur Riders flourish by picking up four wickets during his economical four-over spell (4-22). The Zimbabwean all-rounder mopped up the Riders for just 146 in 19.2 overs as the Durbar Rajshahi secured a rare 24-run victory towards the business end of the BPL 2024-25 season.
