In a surprising revelation, former India and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) pacer Praveen Kumar disclosed that the former Chairman of the IPL Lalit Modi threatened to derail his career when he expressed his desire to play for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) before eventually joining RCB.

During an interview with The Lallantop, Praveen Kumar, known as one of India's best swing bowlers, shed his views on various aspects of his career, including altercations with fans during net sessions, post-retirement life, and insights into alcohol consumption during his playing days.

Among the topics discussed, Praveen recounted his conversation with Lalit Modi, who emerged as the main figure responsible for the BCCI's establishment of the cash-rich league, ultimately transforming it into the wealthiest cricket league globally.

Upon discovering the truth, Praveen retaliated, leading Lalit Modi to call and threaten to terminate his career.

“I didn't want to play for RCB because Bangalore was quite far away from my place, I didn’t know English, and the food was not to my liking. Delhi is quite close to Meerut, which would have allowed me to travel to my home once in a while. However, there was a person who made me sign a paper. I did not know it was the contract. I told them I wanted to play for Delhi and not Bangalore. Lalit Modi called me and threatened to end my career,” Praveen Kumar said in an interview with The Lallantop.

For known reasons, Praveen preferred joining Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) instead. The proximity to Meerut, his hometown, would have facilitated occasional visits to his family.

In his IPL career spanning from 2008 to 2017, Praveen played for teams like RCB, Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab), Sunrisers Hyderabad and the Gujarat Lions, taking 90 wickets in 119 matches across ten seasons.

After not being picked in the IPL auction, Praveen announced his retirement in 2018. He remains involved in T20 leagues designed for retired cricketers.
