'He Still Loves Hawking Cylinders': Rinku Singh Reflects on Father's Struggle

Indian batter, Rinku Singh received his maiden India call-up for the upcoming T20I series against Ireland and the Asian Games in Hangzhou, following his successful stint in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023.


Rinku Singh revealed father's work ethic and plan to foster young cricketing talent

The dynamic left-hander scored 474 runs, including three half-centuries, in 14 innings at a strike rate of 149.53, playing for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). But behind the glitz and glamour of professional cricket, Rinku’s story is deeply rooted in hard work and persistence.

The 25-year-old cricketer recently opened up about his father's continued dedication to his job of hawking cylinders, even though the family now leads a comfortable life thanks to the cricketer's success.

During an interaction with PTI, Rinku mentioned that despite informing his father that he can now relax, he continues to work and sell cylinders as he still enjoys his job.

"I told Papa that you can relax now. But he is still hawking cylinders. He still loves that job. At one level, I understand his part also. If he starts relaxing at home, he will get bored instantly. If someone has worked all his life, it is difficult to tell him to stop unless he wants,” said Rinku.

Rinku further revealed that he is currently building a hostel, conveniently located next to a cricket ground for the kids' benefit. The prodigious batter added that he was inspired by someone who acts like an elder brother to him, who proposed planning something special for these children.

Together, they decided to construct the hostel, with the elder brother financing half of the project, and the cricketer taking responsibility for the other half.

"I am getting a hostel constructed and the cricket ground is adjacent to it, so it would become easy for the kids. Someone, who is like an elder brother told me that let's plan something for these kids. Let's construct a hostel. He financed half and I decided to pay the other half,” concluded Rinku.

Rinku's selection for the Ireland Tour and Asian Games 2023 is a result of his hard work, sincerity, and dedication. Fans will be eagerly awaiting his performances, hoping that he solidifies his spot in India's middle order.
