People frequently debate who will carry on the torch for Team India after the departures of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Ruturaj Gaikwad are just a few of the many names that have been mentioned, but Wasim Akram, fondly called the "Sultan of Swing," made an interesting judgment while discussing the subject.

Wasim Akram sees Arshdeep Singh as India's future superstar

The former Pakistani fast bowler recently spoke with Radio Haanji and praised Arshdeep Singh, who was temporarily sidelined after making outstanding contributions the previous year. However, Akram noted that Arshdeep needs to work on his pace, which will only get better if he participates in more First-Class cricket.

"I saw him (Arshdeep). He has a future. I said it during last year's Asia Cup as well that he should play long. He has the swing but pace-wise, he needs to play more First-Class cricket to increase his speed. He is young and I like the way he bowls. He is a wicket-taker. The more he plays, the muscles will grow and he will be able to generate more pace," Akram told Radio Haanji.

Arshdeep significantly contributed to The Men in Blue’s success since making his debut in England in July 2022 and up until this past February. He has taken a total of 41 wickets in 26 games, averaging 17.78 and keeping an economy rate of 8.39. However, the 24-year-old is yet to take an ODI scalp after three failed attempts.

Since his IPL debut in 2019, Arshdeep has been one of the integral members of the Punjab Kings’ squad. He had a fantastic IPL 2022, taking 10 wickets at an exceptional economy rate of 7.70. His numbers in IPL 2023 were also impressive, though an economy rate of 9.70 for 17 wickets was not up to par. In total, the left-arm quick has 57 wickets in 51 matches in the competition.

Led by Hardik Pandya, India will begin the five-match T20I series in West Indies later on Thursday (August 3). Arshdeep, in all likelihood, will be back in action in national colours after six months.
