New Zealand and Australia met for the first T20I match of Australia’s tour of New Zealand, and the Kiwis set a high target for the Australian team to chase. While chasing 216 runs, Australia lost wickets as they lost their top order opening batsmen for a low score.

The Australian captain Mitchell Marsh walked into the field at number 3 to lead the team from the front and played a captain’s knock to take Australia towards the victory line. Despite Marsh’s quick half-century, the highlight of the game was Tim David’s phenomenal knock knock which made Australia win the game by six wickets.

Tim David scored 31 runs off 10 deliveries with a strike rate of 310 as he smashed 2 fours and 3 sixes in the last two overs. Mitchell Marsh put 72 runs on the board, but David’s knock left the spectators shocked who were hoping for their home team to win.

‘I am very proud of him’ - Mitchell Marsh on Tim David’s fiery innings

After the game, Mitchell Marsh was awarded the player of the match, where he could not stop praising Tim for his striking ability to hit boundaries when required. He said,

"Complete trust in your game and a real confidence to be able to go out there and do that. From the moment he came out he was really calm, he knew what we wanted to do and I think he’s just learning and learning over the last two years."

While talking about Tim's previous knocks in T20 matches, Marsh discussed,

"You’ve seen him dominate T20 matches around the world and come onto the international stage and feel at home playing for Australia. It’s special to watch and (I am) very proud of him. Any time you chase down 216 is a great effort, and we just got over the line by the sheer brilliance of Tim David."

New Zealand and Australia will next meet on 23rd February for the second T20 match in Auckland of the three match T20I series, which will then be followed by a two-match Test series.
