Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting is all praise for Indian batter Shreyas Iyer ahead of the IPL 2025 season. It is worth noting that both Ponting and Shreyas were appointed as new head coach and captain of the franchise as replacements for Trevor Bayliss and Shikhar Dhawan respectively.

The Punjab Kings players are currently prepping themselves up for the impending challenge. They will face Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on March 25 in their opening match of the IPL 2025 season.

Ricky Ponting in awe of Shreyas Iyer

Former Australian captain and three-time World Cup winner Ricky Ponting has heaped a significant praise on star Indian batter Shreyas Iyer. The head coach of the Punjab Kings franchise, Ponting added that he could not have asked for a better captain, considering Iyer led KKR to an IPL title just last year.

While addressing the media at the season launch press conference, Ricky Ponting said:

“He's a great human being. He is an IPL-winning captain. We could not have asked for more. He has only joined the camp a couple of days ago so he is starting to make his mark on the team as a captain and as a leader and that will evolve over the next few days before we get into our first game. But as I said, I could not have been happier.”

Notably, both Shreyas Iyer and Ricky Ponting have previously collaborated in IPL for Delhi Capitals up until the former was released by the franchise ahead of the 2022 edition of the tournament.

Ponting was appointed as the head coach of the Punjab Kings back in September last year. Moreover, the franchise roped in Iyer at the IPL 2025 mega auction in November.

With new captain and new head coach at the helm, the Punjab Kings will commence its IPL 2025 campaign in Gujarat on March 25.
