Ever since the T20 WC victory, India has been focused on the 'next-gen'. After Harbhajan Singh, the baton for India's next off-spin sensation was carefully passed on to Ravichandran Ashwin.
However, while answering what comes next or who comes next, considering that the 37-year-old spin wizard is not getting any younger by the day, former India cricketer Dinesh Karthik shared his insights.
Having recently announced his retirement from cricket, Dinesh Karthik, a respected figure in the cricketing world, believes that Washington Sundar could be the next great off-spinner.
“India are definitely looking for a next-gen off-spinner, as in last India ‘A’ series against England Lions, they tried three off-spinners in three matches: Pulkit Narang, Washington Sundar and Saransh Jain,” Dinesh Karthik said on Cricbuzz.
“They are trying out and Washington Sundar is the front-runner behind Ravichandran Ashwin right now. He’s done well in whatever limited opportunities he’s got and I feel he will get his due first before going to anybody else.”
Why It Is Difficult To Find Off-Spinners?
Since the bats have gotten bigger and the wickets have become flatter, the margin of error for off-spinners is minimal, especially in white-ball cricket.
Former India off-spinner and Tamil Nadu coach M Venkataramana shares his on why it is difficult to find off-spinners:
“See, any spinner will get hit on a given day. Off-spinners are much easier in the sense they get into the arc because a lot of cricketers are good at hitting sixes to cow corner. So it is a natural shot as off-spinners get into that slot very easily,”he told Indian Express.
