Jasprit Bumrah, India’s premier fast bowler, has often expressed his desire to don the captain’s hat for the national team.

Having led India in the postponed Test against England in 2022, Bumrah recently advocated for bowlers to be considered for captaincy roles, calling them the "smart ones." However, not everyone shares his enthusiasm for the idea.

Former Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik recently shared his thoughts on Bumrah's captaincy prospects, emphasizing the challenges that come with the role.

"Everything is right… He is calm, cool, good maturity, but he is a fast bowler, so how can we play him in all three formats? That is the biggest question the selectors would have had,"  Karthik remarked.

Karthik highlighted the importance of managing Bumrah’s fitness, particularly given the demands placed on fast bowlers. He likened Bumrah to a "Kohinoor diamond" that needs to be protected.

"For a fast bowler like Bumrah, his fitness needs to be monitored and he needs to be protected as a player and only made to play in important matches, I keep saying this about Bumrah, he is like a Kohinoor diamond, we got to protect him, take care of him, make sure that he lasts as long as possible because whenever Bumrah plays in any format he makes an impact and that's what we want."  Karthik added.

Bumrah last featured for India in T20 World Cup, where he earned the Player of the Series award, taking 15 wickets in 8 matches, including two match-winning spells.

While Bumrah remains open to captaincy, even humorously naming himself his favorite captain, Karthik’s concerns underscore the challenges of balancing leadership and workload for a player of Bumrah’s caliber.

As Bumrah prepares for his comeback in the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh, his role remains crucial to India’s success, especially with the Australia tour on the horizon.
