The 2011 World Cup victory is written in golden letters in Indian cricket history. It was played by 15 men who gave their everything for the country and returned victorious; it was then-skipper MS Dhoni's six that was etched in the memory of the fans. However, former South African superstar AB de Villiers has given a clear statement on India's World Cup triumph.

Speaking on his YouTube Channel named 'AB de Villiers 360', the Proteas and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) legend termed it as India's victory, not Dhoni's, while replying to a question from a fan.

He was asked, 'What do you think makes a cricketer great? Winning ICC titles or earning people's love and enjoying the sport?' The answer was reasonably unique from de Villiers, who mentioned that a player does not lift a trophy alone; it's the team. He also referred to this with Ben Stokes' example for England's 2019 World Cup win.

“Cricket is a team game, it’s not a player lifting the World Cup. I see that way too often on social platforms. MS Dhoni did not win the World Cup, India won the World Cup, so keep that in mind. Don’t forget that. Ben Stokes did not lift the trophy in Lord’s back in 2019, it was team England,” said De Villiers.

Further, he added that winning the World Cup requires support from everyone in the team, not just 2 or 3 individuals.

"There's a lot that goes into winning the World Cup, I think of the coaching staff, the selectors, board members, directors, the players and the substitutes," he concluded.

Moving on to the upcoming World Cup, the first match is set to be played between England and New Zealand on 5th October in Ahmedabad.
