Virat Kohli retired from Test cricket on May 12 and since then, plenty of former cricketers have tried to dissect the reason for his retirement. Now, Monty Panesar, the former England spinner has also shared his views on Kohli's decision in an interview with PTI as quoted by Indian Express.
Monty Panesar Dissects Kohli's Retirement Decision
The left-arm spinner mentioned that Virat Kohli struggled big time with the line around off the off-stump on fast and bouncy wickets in Australia. Thus, it would have dented his confidence and it probably crossed his mind that the ball would swing more in England. The former English star reckoned that Kohli probably did not work on the solution to tackle that corridor of uncertainty and decided to leave the format.
"With Kohli, what has happened is that against the ball outside the off stump, the fifth stump line, especially in Australia on fast bouncy pitches, he was struggling. So he probably thought maybe the fact that in England it is going to swing a lot more, he’ll probably hasn’t worked out solutions in that corridor of uncertainty. “And I think that’s probably been one of the reasons why he thought to retire and put all his energy with RCB and ODI cricket for India," Panesar said, speaking to PTI.
Panesar applauded Virat Kohli's contribution to Test cricket and stated that the player probably felt that he had achieved everything and wanted youngsters to step up.
“I think he’s done very well as a cricketer in all formats. He has been a brilliant ambassador for Test cricket. He probably feels that he’s done his best, he’s achieved everything and probably feels like it’s time for the youngsters to step up."
Along with Virat Kohli, Rohit Shama also retired from Test cricket and India are set to start a new era in the longest format under Shubman Gill. The first challenge is the five-match series against England and it will start in Leeds on June 20.
