The Pakistan cricket team crashed to a nine-wicket defeat against New Zealand at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch to go 0-1 down in the five-match T20I series. Batting first, the ‘Men in Green’ folded up for just 91 to record their lowest T20I total against the ‘Black Caps’.

In response, hosts New Zealand cruised past their target with nearly half their overs intact. Notably, the outcome marks Pakistan’s worst margin of defeat in T20Is in terms of number of balls remaining. Here, we compile a list of Pakistan’s biggest defeats in the format history.

Pakistan’s six worst T20I defeats

Back in 2018, Pakistan lost to Australia by nine wickets and with 55 balls to spare at the Harare Sports Club. While the outcome remained Pakistan’s biggest margin of defeat for the next seven years, a young ‘Men in Green’ unit recorded an even worse defeat, albeit against New Zealand at the latter’s home ground on March 16, 2025.

Playing under the leadership of newly-appointed captain Agha Salman, Pakistan accrued just 91 in 18.4 overs, with Khushdil Shah himself chipping in with 32 of those runs off 30 balls. In the run-chase, Shaheen Afridi went wicketless in his opening spell as New Zealand cruised to victory in just 10.1 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match T20I series.

Nonetheless, here is a list of six of Pakistan’s worst T20I defeats in terms of number of balls remaining:

The Pakistan cricket team will now travel to the University Oval in Dunedin for the second T20I match of the series. Trailing 0-1, the action will commence from 6:45 AM IST onwards on March 18.

It is worth noting that the Pakistan team is playing the T20I series in the absence of several of their senior pros like Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan.
