Big players shine when the stakes are high and Mumbai Indians skipper Harmanpreet Kaur did exactly that on the grandest stage of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 final. With MI in all sorts of trouble early on, the experienced campaigner soaked up the pressure, dug in and then counter-attacked with a stunning 33-ball fifty to put her team back on track.
It was a knock that had everything: grit, determination and some sensational strokeplay, proving once again why she remains one of the biggest match-winners in women’s cricket.
A Captain’s Knock When MI Needed It the Most
Walking in at 14/2 after 4.3 overs with openers Hayley Matthews and Yastika Bhatia back in the hut, Kaur had her work cut out. The early wickets had put MI on the back foot and with the Delhi Capitals bowlers on fire, the last thing they needed was another wicket.
But Harmanpreet is built for these moments. She absorbed the pressure early, assessed the conditions and ensured there were no further hiccups. At the other end, Nat Sciver-Brunt, who has been in imperious form this season with over 500 runs, provided much-needed stability.
Kaur was watchful initially, but once she got her eye in, she shifted gears in style. The turning point came in the 10th over when she decided enough was enough.
Facing Annabel Sutherland, Harmanpreet Kaur unleashed her brute force, smashing a six and a four in the over to get things moving. The very next over, she took Jess Jonassen to the cleaners with three consecutive boundaries, stamping her authority on the game.
Reaching Fifty In Style
As the innings progressed, Kaur looked more and more in control. She wasn’t just finding boundaries, she was also rotating the strike brilliantly and kept the scoreboard ticking. With every shot, the MI dugout grew more confident and the Delhi Capitals’ early advantage slowly started slipping away.
The defining moment came in the 13th over when Kaur reached her well-deserved half-century. She brought up the landmark with a classic four down to long-on off Minnu Mani.
WPL Final Live Score
At the time of writing, Kaur and Sciver-Brunt have steadied the ship beautifully with MI cruising at 87/2 after 13 overs. With seven overs still to go, the duo hs set a strong platform for a late flourish. A total above 150 looks well within reach, one that could prove to be a match-winning score given the pressure of a final.
