On Sunday, Sri Lanka had a memorable day on the field, defeating New Zealand by an innings and 154 runs in the final Test of the ongoing series at Galle International Stadium. Batting first, Sri Lanka posted a whopping total of 602 runs in their first innings, courtesy of exceptional knocks from Kamindu Mendis, Dinesh Chandimal and Kusal Mendis.

In response, New Zealand were bundled out for 88 runs, their lowest-ever score in Tests against Sri Lanka. Prabath Jayasuriya starred with the ball for the Lankans, registering a phenomenal six-wicket haul. After Sri Lanka enforced the follow-on, New Zealand were slightly more resilient in their second innings, with Tom Blundell, Glenn Phillips and Mitchell Santner slamming valuable fifties.

However, the lower middle order batters' valiant efforts could only power the visitors to 360 in their second innings. Debutant spinner Nishan Peiris wreaked havoc in the BlackCaps' camp, rattling them with a sensational five-wicket haul.

(Updated WTC points table after New Zealand's defeat in Galle Test)

With an emphatic win over New Zealand in the second Test, Sri Lanka clinched the series by two-nil. The hosts also witnessed a promotion in the WTC points table, claiming third place with an impressive PCT of 55.50.

Considering India's significantly higher PCT than their competitors, Rohit Sharma's troops will likely qualify for the WTC final for the third consecutive time. As Australia occupy second place with a PCT of 62.50, their upcoming Test series against the Lankans will likely settle the debate regarding the second entrant to the much-awaited decider at Lord's.

On the other hand, New Zealand's WTC final qualification dream is almost shattered following their humiliating defeat in the Galle Test. The BlackCaps currently occupy the seventh position and are pretty much out of the WTC final race.
