On Saturday, September 28, BCCI took to Twitter to announce the much-awaited retention policy for IPL 2025 auction. The apex cricket board of India made a few changes to the policies and has increased the retentions from four to six players.
If a team wishes to retain six star players before the auction, one must be uncapped. Further, the BCCI also brought back the uncapped player rule where any international cricketer that has retired for over five years will be considered an uncapped star.
MS Dhoni Likely To Return As Uncapped Player For IPL 2025
This rule will benefit CSK the most as it opens the doors for them to retain MS Dhoni as an uncapped player. There is suspense over MS Dhoni's IPL future as he was touted to play his last season in IPL 2023 when he won the title with CSK. However, he also played the previous season and was awaiting BCCI's rules for the upcoming season to take a decision on his future.
While CSK have maintained their silence on MS Dhoni's participation, KKR co-owner Shahrukh Khan has teased thala during an award show. Hosting an award function with Karan Johar, SRK joked about Dhoni continuing to extend his IPL career.
Shahrukh Khan Teases Dhoni
“The biggest thing about legends… unki khasiyat ye hoti hai ki legends ko maalum hota hai, when to stop, when to retire. Like the great Sachin Tendulkar, like Sunil Chhetri—the footballer, like Roger Federer—the great tennis star. They all know when to retire, and I think it’s time you did too. So please go back. Thank you very much,” Shah Rukh said to Johar.
“By that standard, aur us hisab se aap kyon retire nahi hote,” Johar replied, to which Shah Rukh added, “Actually main doosre kisam ka legendary hoon. Main aur Dhoni ek kisam ke legends hai. Na na kar ke bhi 10 baar IPL khel jaate hai,” he added.
Talking about KKR, they cannot retain Sunil Narine as uncapped player who hasn't played international cricket since 2019 as the rule is only applicable for Indian cricketers.
