'Good Thing About India Is..,' - ABD Explains Why Rohit & Co. Might Back Patidar For 5th Test

Former South Africa skipper AB de Villiers believes India might continue to back Rajat Patidar despite his poor form in the ongoing Test series against England.

Patidar has only managed to score 63 runs in six innings so far and has struggled to make an impact. His last five scores of 9, 5, 0, 17, and 0, along with his manner of dismissals, have raised concerns among the team and selectors about his ability.

Despite his batting struggles, Patidar has retained his place in the squad, with KL Rahul sidelined due to injury concerns.

Given India's supportive team culture, the ex-RCB cricketer has complete faith in Patidar's ability to bounce back. He emphasised the importance of backing players during tough times to bring out their best.

“Rajat Patidar not having the series of a lifetime or one to remember. But the good thing about this Indian team and the culture is that you will survive in that side because of the great cricket they are playing and the results coming their way," said De Villiers.

"If his attitude is catchy and if he is a likeable character in the dressing room, Rohit and the selection panel will have the ability to say, Hold on, we do believe this guy has a future and we see him as a part of the team moving forward. Even though he hasn't been scoring runs, let's give him a longer run,” he added.

Patidar was brought into India's Test squad as a replacement for Virat Kohli, but he has failed to meet expectations. Despite high hopes, he couldn't deliver any impactful performances in his first three matches after debuting in the 2nd Test in Vizag.

There are speculations about uncapped left-handed batter Devdutt Padikkal making his debut in the final Test at Dharamsala.

If true, Padikkal will likely replace the underperforming Patidar. Despite getting opportunities, Patidar has failed to make a significant contribution, leading to speculation about him being benched for the last game of the series.
