Jofra Archer is nearing his England Test return and is likely to feature in the second Test against India at Edgbaston starting 2 July. However, former England captain Michael Vaughan is not on the same page and feels the pacer should not be rushed back after just one game.
Vaughan Not Convinced for Archer’s Test Return
Archer, who last played a Test match back in 2021, recently turned out for Sussex against Durham as he looked to prove his fitness for the longest format and make his Test return.
Speaking to BBC Test match special, Vaughan shed light on his views on Archer’s return and believes that one first-class match is not enough to bring him back into the side for the second Test.
“The good thing is that Jofra is back in the equation but I would like to see him play another four-day game. The intensity at Test-match level is so different to county cricket. I would go with same XI,” Vaughan said to BBC.
Archer had a pretty decent outing on his return for Sussex, bowling 18 controlled overs and finishing with figures of 1-32. Meanwhile, selector Luke Wright has also indicated that if Archer came through the county game well, he could be in contention for the second Test at Edgbaston.
Vaughan Urges England to Trust Current Attack Over Archer Gamble
Vaughan’s call to see Archer in another county game holds weight, given the pacer’s stop-start return from injuries in the recent past. Notably, Sussex’s next four-day fixture against Warwickshire overlaps with the second Test at Edgbaston which does not leave any option of playing both.
In fact England wouldn’t mind Archer’s addition, especially with Mark Wood already sidelined. Archer himself cannot wait to be back as his presence would be a major boost to an otherwise inexperienced bowling attack. Vaughan, however, has backed the current line-up that performed well and played a key role in securing a 1-0 lead at Headingley.
