Mark Wood is eyeing a remarkable return to Test cricket this summer, as the England pacer remains hopeful of featuring in the high-profile series against India later in July. Initially ruled out of the entire five-match contest due to knee surgery in March, the 35-year-old’s recovery has progressed better than expected.

Having battled several injuries throughout his career, Wood’s determination and resilience once again proved to be the difference maker as the Durham man looks to make a timely comeback and boost England’s inexperienced pace attack.

Mark Wood Plots Return in Final Test vs India

Speaking to BBC Test Match Special, the 35-year-old England pacer shared encouraging news about his recovery, stating he has resumed bowling in the nets and is aiming for a return in the final Test against India.

“I am still hoping to play a part in this [India] series. I am still targeting maybe the last Test. Anything before that is probably a bit too soon. The last Test I might not get there but at the minute that is still my focus, that I might play a part,” Wood said.

The much anticipated series is underway as Shubman Gill’s India began their campaign against England on Friday in Leeds. The fifth and final Test is scheduled to start from July 31 at the Oval, leaving over a month for a possible comeback for Wood.

Wood’s Comeback Could Ignite England’s Pace Attack

Mark Wood remains a rare asset in world cricket, capable of unsettling any batting line-up with his express pace. His ability to generate raw speed, touching over 150 kmph makes him a vital weapon for England.

Wood’s signs of early recovery after knee surgery come as a massive boost, not only for the remainder of the England summer but also with the high-octane Ashes series coming up in Australia later this year.
