As Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma both have hung up their Test boots within a week, concerns loom over who will be at the helm for India now. Names like Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah came to the forefront with the most emphasis on Shubman Gill.
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri backed Shubman Gill, for the role despite the batter being not at his very best in Whites. Stressing on his captaincy and performances, Shastri neglects Bumrah as the best option and elaborates on why Gill should be made the captain.
Shastri Makes Strong Case for Gill
While speaking on the latest episode of ICC Review, Ravi Shastri explained that Gill's overseas record should not dampen his chances to lead the team.
"They’ve got experience as captains, now, captaining their franchise, and that makes a difference. The little I’ve seen of Shubman looks very interesting. Composed, and calm, he has all the qualities. You people will talk, he’s not scored runs overseas. You know, that topic always comes up, not scoring runs overseas. Sometimes I tell them, Go and see your record, how much have you done overseas?" Shastri said, as quoted by News18.
Shastri then stressed the number of games Gill got overseas. Notably, Shubman has played only 13 overseas Test matches and has an average of 29.50 in them with 649 runs and a century under his name.
“Overseas, overseas, let him play, let him get a run overseas, then he'll score runs. He's a class player. He has a decade of cricket ahead of him for the country. And I'm sure he'll get cracking in one of the tours, he'll make up for all those runs he's not got on earlier," Shastri added.
Shastri Neglects Bumrah For Captaincy
Neglecting Jasprit Bumrah's prospects to lead India in Tests, Shastri added, "See, for me, Jasprit would have been the obvious choice after Australia. But I don’t want Jasprit to be made captain, and then you lose him as a bowler."
Notably, Gill's leadership is unquestionable as of now in the T20 format as his IPL franchise Gujarat Titans is currently leading the charts with 8 wins out of 11 games.
