Ben Foakes takes a stunner [Source: @surreycricket/X]
The opening day of the 28th County Championship Division One match between Surrey and Yorkshire had its fair share of action, but none more eye-catching than Ben Foakes’ superb display of wicketkeeping.
Notably, Yorkshire were bowled out for 255 in their first innings after being put into bat. While Jonny Bairstow’s counter-attacking 89 stood out, it was Ben Foakes’ sensational catch that stole the limelight.
Ben Foakes Pulls Off an Absolute Blinder!
The stunner was taken when Yorkshire were still trying to build momentum in the opening session. Foakes, known for his super athletic activity behind the wicket and having some of the most elite records, pulled off the stunner to dismiss Jonathan Tattersall for 8, diving full stretch to his left to cling onto a top edge off of a pull shot that seemed destined to race past the boundary.

Having dismissed off Tom Lawes, Tattersall had looked weak at the crease, facing 38 balls with 8 runs. In the innings, Foakes had already played a crucial role with the gloves, completing four catches, and dismissing James Wharton, Lyth and Matthew Revis. But it was his take to remove Tattersall that had the crowd at The Oval on their feet.
Surrey Control Yorkshire's Innings
At stumps on Day 1, Surrey reached 46/0 in 13 overs with Rory Burns unbeaten on 27 and Dom Sibley on 10. They now trail Yorkshire by 209 runs going into Day 2.
Yorkshire’s 255 was largely built around Bairstow’s 114-ball knock, supported by Adam Lyth and a late cameo from Jordan Thompson (30). Tom Lawes and Jordan Clark led the bowling for Surrey, taking three wickets each, while Dan Lawrence chipped in with two.
Surrey will look to capitalise on their strong start with the bat on Day 2 and build a first-innings lead. With Foakes in form behind the stumps and confidence high, the hosts appear well-placed after an even Day 1.
