Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has finally opened up regarding his sudden retirement from ODI cricket. The 36-year-old confirmed his exit from the format earlier this month, and maintained his availability for Australia’s T20I selection in lieu of next year’s 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.

During a recent podcast in Australia, Maxwell explained the reasoning behind his retirement, and also unveiled his chat with former national teammate and current Chairman of Selectors, George Bailey.

Glenn Maxwell’s ODI Goodbye Comes With A Selfless Twist

Glenn Maxwell, often plagued with injuries, said that he believed he was letting the team down. The star all-rounder confirmed that he had a chat with George Bailey, during which he informed the Chairman of Selectors to start finding his replacement in a bid to prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

While speaking on the Final Word Podcast and as quoted by sen.com.au, Maxwell said:

“I always said I wasn’t going to hand my position over if I felt like I was still good enough to play. I didn’t want to just hold on for a couple of series and almost play for selfish reasons. They are moving in such a clear direction so this give them the best look at what the line-up is leading into that next World Cup. I know how important that planning is.”

Glenn Maxwell also added that he did not want to play a few more series for “selfish reasons”, and wanted to give Cricket Australia enough time to re-shape the national line-up for the next big event.

Glenn Maxwell, a two-time World Cup winner from 2015 and 2023, became Australia’s third prominent personality after Steve Smith and Marcus Stoinis to announce his retirement from ODI cricket this year.
