England’s red-ball squad could receive a major boost as pace spearhead Mark Wood is expected to return from injury during the fourth or fifth Test of the highly anticipated Test series against India. The news was confirmed by England selector Luke Wright, who provided a promising update on Wood’s recovery following knee surgery.
Mark Wood’s Likely Return Adds Firepower To England
The 35-year-old fast bowler, known for his express pace and reverse swing, underwent surgery shortly after England’s disappointing early exit from the Champions Trophy 2025. He has been sidelined for nearly four months.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Wright said Wood has begun light bowling sessions and is steadily progressing in his rehabilitation.
"I think Woody's now started bowling just lightly, to be honest. He's just off a few paces, but that's been a great sign. So, he's on the road to recovery. I think he's more long-term, if we can get him back, he might have an option for the fourth or fifth Test. But again, each day it's ticking off each box and making sure he's OK,” Wright said on Sky Sports.
If Wood returns as expected, it would significantly bolster England’s bowling firepower for the second half of the series. His pace and ability to deliver hostile spells have previously troubled Indian batters.
Adding to this, Wright has also provided an injury update on Archer who is also in doubt for a series start. Jofra Archer is recovering from a thumb injury sustained during the final stages of IPL 2025.He has been ruled out of the first Test but is likely to be available for the second Test.
It is important to note that with Archer, Wood, and Gus Atkinson unavailable at the start of the tour, the ECB has turned to Jamie Overton, recalling him to the Test squad after more than three years.
