In a significant development, talismanic Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell bid adieu to One-Day Internationals. The veteran cricketer announced his retirement from the 50-over format while making himself available for T20 cricket.

Maxwell was a genuine match-winner for Australia with bat and ball in ODIs. As he has hung up his boots, here are three players whom Australia can try as his potential replacement in the ODI setup.

1. Tim David

  • Swashbuckling batter Tim David has been a regular face in Australia's T20I setup. However, the finisher has played only a handful of ODIs, with his last appearance coming back in 2023.
  • Maxwell's ODI retirement has certainly opened the doors for Tim David, who now has a golden opportunity to make his comeback in the format.
  • In 20 List-A matches, Tim David has struck 790 runs at a marvellous average of 60.76 and a blistering strike rate of 120.06. He recently oozed his class in the IPL 2025, emerging as RCB's go-to finisher in the slog overs.
  • Apart from scoring brisk runs, David can chip in with a few overs of handy off-spin bowling, making him a valuable asset in the format.

2. Ashton Turner

  • Cool, calm and composed- these three words perfectly describe Ashton Turner as a fantastic finisher in white-ball cricket. The explosive right-handed batter burst into the scene following his Mohali mayhem that stunned a formidable Indian side back in 2019.
  • However, his inconsistent returns forced the selectors to axe him from the format, with Maxwell and Stoinis forming a fearsome finishing duo. But one can't shy away from the fact that Turner has been a force to reckon with the bat for Perth Scorchers and Western Australia, scripting numerous victories with his extraordinary finishing skills.
  • Thus, with Smith, Maxwell and Stoinis retired, Australia could recall the right-handed batter to ensure experience in their ODI lineup. In nine ODIs, Turner has slammed 192 runs at an average of 32 and a strike rate of 120. He has had a fairly successful List-A career, amassing 1834 runs at a superb strike rate of 96.52 in 70 innings.

3. Beau Webster

  • Promising all-rounder Beau Webster has been a game-changer for Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League. Apart from scoring 1814 T20 runs, Webster has been handy with the ball, scalping 25 wickets in 49 innings.
  • The tall Tasmanian has had an eventful List-A career, slamming 1334 runs and bagging 49 wickets with his medium-pace bowling. He brings flexibility to the table and can be a match-winner with his all-round attributes in the middle order.

P.S: Australia can also try all-rounders Cooper Connolly and Matthew Short in the middle order while assigning the top-order slot to Jake Fraser-McGurk. Connolly and Matthew Short have mostly played at the top order but can be tried in the middle order as they can play shots all around the park.
