Heading into the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 mini-auction, the Mumbai Indians (MI) franchise had only one thing in mind to buy fast bowlers, having retained most of their core squad from the 2023 edition.

Come December 19, MI management led by co-owner Akash Ambani, purchased as many as three pacers - South Africa's Gerald Coetzee, Sri Lanka's Dilshan Madushanka, and Nuwan Thushara - spending 14.40 crore on all their new fast bowling recruits.

Coetzee starred for South Africa in the recently concluded ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India, while both Madushanka and Thushara creating waves in Sri Lankan cricket with their bowling.

Apart from pacers, MI also brought Afghanistan's all-rounders Mohammad Nabi and Shreyas Gopal to add depth to their already air-tight bowling attack.

The Mark Boucher-coached side had already retained the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Jason Behrendorff, Akash Madhwal, and Arjun Tendulkar as pacers.

New bowling coach and MI legend Lasith Malinga took to the social media website 'X' and welcomed the new members of a "formidable" fast bowling attack.

Here's what Malinga said

"FORMIDABLE! That is the first word that comes to my mind when I see our fast bowling lineup for the #IPL2024. Welcome to MI, Dilshan Madushanka, Gerald Coetzee and Nuwan Thushara,"

The spinning duties will be spearheaded by Piyush Chawla, and  Kumar Karthikeya with Nabi and Gopal also complimenting them this season.
