Travis Head To Open, Cummins In As Lead Pacer; Here’s SRH’s Best Playing XI For IPL 2024

The highly anticipated IPL 2024 is just months away, and ahead of the mega carnival, the auction process for the same concluded yesterday in Dubai.

Speaking of Sunrisers Hyderabad, the franchise initially scripted a league record of fetching the costliest player as they locked in Australian World Cup-winning captain Pat Cummins in a gigantic 20.25 crores deal. However, the record was shattered moments later by KKR as they bagged pacer Mitchell Starc in a whopping 24.74 crores bid.

Besides, SRH also fetched World Cup final hero Travis Head in a relatively steal deal. Having said that, except for a few backups, the team called it a night in Dubai, thus fixating a 25-member squad.

Meanwhile, here’s presenting SRH’s probable playing XI for the initial phase of the crucial tournament.


Top Order- Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Rahul Tripathi

While Travis Head has been a middle-order batter for Australia in longer formats, the explosive hitter likes to open in the T20s. 

Thus, he is likely to partner up with Indian uncapped sensation Abhishek Sharma. Abhishek was promoted to the top order by chance but excelled in the role. Across 11 games, he scored 226 runs with a handsome strike rate of 143.95 in 2023.

Having said that, experienced batter Rahul Tripathi will further anchor SRH’s innings at number three. He has been rock solid at that spot and is a perfect candidate to stabilize things in case of top-order collapse.


Middle Order- Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, Abdul Samad, Shahbaz Ahmed

South African experienced force Aiden Markram will likely bat at number four. He can occasionally open the innings as well. But given his experience, Markram is best suited in the middle-order role. 

Aiden’s South African comrade Heinrich Klaasen will follow in. Later, Indian talents Abdul Samad and Shahbaz Ahmed could come in to finish the innings. Samad showed a glimpse of his fire powers in 2021, and Ahmed, who recently came in from RCB, is also a good hitter.

While the lower order is not as strong as SRH management would hope for, the team will bank on the top order to do maximum damage.

The highly prized Australian captain will lead SRH's pace attack for the 2024 IPL season. While his track record in IPL is not worthwhile, Cummins will back his recent form to create an impact for SRH.

Besides, veteran Bhuvneshwar Kumar will also play a crucial role. He picked up 16 wickets last season with a subtle economy of 8.33. On the other hand, Natarajan will also be a trump card. Though injury concerns will linger around, Nataranjan’s art of deception makes him a valuable asset.

Mayank Markande remains SRH’s premier spinning option, with Samad and Ahmed working out as part-timers. If Markande stumbles along the way, Washington Sundar is a perfect impact player option for SRH.
