Australia and England are preparing for the pinnacle of Test cricket as the Ashes 2025 approach quickly. The first match of the series is set to begin on the 21st of November at the Optus Stadium in Perth. The English side has reached Australia and their preparations are underway, with them playing a warm-up game against England Lions in Perth.
Now, English opener Zak Crawley has backed his team to do well in the all-important series despite getting only one warm-up game to kickstart the series. This schedule has been criticised because of the limited practice that they are getting, but Crawley has dismissed all the concerns.
"Luckily I don't have to worry about those sorts of things. I just try and turn up and play my role in the team. As far as I'm concerned, it's good prep. We're getting used to the weather, getting used to the flies. It's good prep and I feel like we'll be ready for next week," he said.
Crawley reveals special connection with Perth
Crawley also expressed his excitement to play in Perth. He has some ties to the city, having previously played for the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League (BBL). He also revealed that his former batting coach was from Perth and that he has a special connection with the city.
"I love this town—it's one of my favourite places in the world, so I love being back. Got a lot of friends here; my old batting coach is from here and I feel like I've got a connection here. I love Perth," he added.
He added that coming out to bat in front of 60,000 spectators at the Optus Stadium would be a special moment in his career. He did not get a chance to play here when England last toured Australia due to COVID-19 restrictions.
"I didn't get to (play here) last time with COVID, so it'll be very special. I played for the Scorchers here and Optus Stadium is an unbelievable ground, a lot of English people there hopefully and it's going to be one of the most special moments of my career for sure," he said.
Meanwhile, Crawley had a good outing in the only warm-up game ahead of the Ashes. He scored a brisk 82 in 101 balls in the first innings. However, he could not continue that form in the second innings, getting dismissed for just three runs.
