In a significant development, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released an official update on skipper Shubman Gill's injury. Notably the stylish batter left the field midway with a problematic neck during the second day's play of India's ongoing Test match against South Africa at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

BCCI issues medical update on Shubman Gill

In its official statement, the BCCI revealed that Shubman Gill sustained a neck spasm during the first Test between India and South Africa. He is being monitored by the BCCI medical team and a call on his participation in the remainder of the day's play will be taken after a thorough assessment of his injury.

"Shubman Gill has a neck spasm and is being monitored by the BCCI medical team. A decision on his participation today will be taken as per his progress," the BCCI stated.

After South Africa were folded out for a paltry 159-run total in their first innings, India had a shaky start to their innings, losing Yashasvi Jaiswal for 12 runs. Washington Sundar and KL Rahul stitched a gritty 67-run stand for the second wicket before the former was deceived by a beauty from Simon Harmer.

Shubman Gill entered the middle and instantly got off the mark with a glorious boundary. However, the Indian captain experienced pain in his neck, eventually leaving the field on an individual score of four runs.

Gill's untimely departure opened the floodgates for India, as the hosts went on to lose wickets in a cluster. As of writing, India were 179 for seven, with Axar Patel and Mohammed Siraj batting on 9* and 0*, respectively.
