Harmanpreet Kaur created history on the 2nd of November by becoming the first-ever captain to lead her side to a Women's World Cup win. India beat South Africa by 52 runs at Navi Mumbai's DY Patil Stadium to lift their maiden ICC title.
The Indian skipper was felicitated at Velammal Nexus School in Chennai for her achievement. She was welcomed at the venue with the sounds of dhol and was bestowed with a giant garland. She also indulged in a small practice session with young girls in the school.
After the welcoming ceremony, Harmanpreet sat down for a Q&A session with the students. The World Cup-winning captain admitted that people do not draw comparisons between men's and women's cricket anymore. She added that high viewerships and stadiums packed to capacity for women's games made herproud.
"It is good to see that now people now only talk about cricket without comparing (men's and women's cricket). Now everyone enjoys and the viewership is high; stadiums are full. It is a proud moment," she said, as reported by ANI.
Harmanpreet Kaur and team created history during ODI World Cup 2025
The 2025 ODI World Cup was a very special one for Indian cricket's history. This was their maiden title-win and it was even more special because it came at home. The Indian team's journey in the tournament was turbulent, but they were determined to get their hands on the trophy.
After winning the first two games, they lost three games on the trot and were on the verge of being knocked out. However, they bounced back with a massive win over New Zealand to make it to the semi-finals, where they faced the mighty Australia. Thanks to Jemimah Rodrigues' masterful knock, they cleared that hurdle and also chased down the highest total of 339 runs in a women's ODI game.
Then, in the final, they met South Africa and got a great start, courtesy of Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Varma. They managed to set a target of 299 runs for the Proteas to chase down. And despite Laura Volvaardt's century, they held their nerves to restrict them to a score of 246 and win the match by 52 runs.
