On Saturday, June 14, South Africa ended their 27-year-long trophy drought by defeating Australia by five wickets to win the World Test Championship (WTC) title. With this win, skipper Temba Bavuma became the first South African captain to lift the prestigious Test mace, a moment that dominated headlines and social media.

Aiden Markram was the star of the final, scoring a brilliant 136 off 207 balls. The 30-year-old opened the innings as South Africa chased 282 and remained at the crease until his team needed just six runs to win. Though he was dismissed at that crucial juncture, Markram’s innings proved pivotal to the Proteas’ success.

Markram Breaks Silence On His Beer Moment With Fan

Markram’s performance earned him the Player of the Match award. The celebrations were wild, with the stadium filled with South African chants. Markram himself stole the limelight by jumping over the fence and sharing a beer with a fan—an act that quickly went viral online.

In a recent interview, Markram broke his silence on the incident, revealing that the fan was actually a school friend.

“Yeah, that was cool. That was one of my mates from school. He wanted me to come over and I said, ‘Flip man, I can’t, it’s too busy, it’s chaos.’ And then he was like, ‘Well, here’s a beer.’ And I was like, ‘Okay, I’m in.’ So, I’ve had my first one for today and I’m pretty sure there’ll be a few more,” Markram remarked during a press conference.

Markram Lifts the ICC Test Mace Alongside Bavuma

The celebrations continued as ICC President Jay Shah presented the Test mace to captain Temba Bavuma, who lifted it alongside the rest of the squad. The skipper then handed the mace to Markram, acknowledging his outstanding performance in the final.

The 30-year-old also celebrated the victory with his wife and shared heartfelt moments with his loved ones.
