South Africa scripted history under Temba Bavuma’s leadership as the Proteas beat Australia by five wickets to win their first-ever ICC World Test Championship trophy. The victory also ended the Rainbow Nation’s 27-year-long trophy drought.

The Proteas have often been unlucky in ICC events, having fallen short in several tournaments in the past. However, under Bavuma’s captaincy during the 2023–2025 WTC cycle, the team remained undefeated and carried this confidence into the WTC final at Lord’s.

Temba Bavuma And Co Lift The Test Mace

Kyle Verreynne scored the winning runs, sending the stadium into a frenzy as South African players became emotional. This was the moment fans had long awaited—to see South Africa finally lift the ICC mace.

Following the match, Temba Bavuma spoke to Nasser Hussain, after which ICC president Jay Shah presented the ICC Test Championship mace to skipper Temba Bavuma. The entire South African team and support staff erupted in high-voltage celebrations. Watch the celebrations here.

Australia and South Africa Players Honoured by ICC

Before the trophy celebrations, both captains spoke to the presenter, praising their teams for putting on a great show at Lord’s. Mutual respect was shared by the two leaders, and the ICC also acknowledged all players by awarding them medals.

Australia, as runners-up, were presented with their medals first. This was followed by the South African players, who walked up to the podium to collect the winners’ medals.

Stuart Broad Makes a Cameo During Trophy Celebration

While Jay Shah presented the ICC Test Championship mace to South Africa, it was Stuart Broad who brought the mace and placed it on a stand near the podium. Broad, who has some memorable performances to his name at Lord’s, joined South Africa as their bowling consultant before the Test match.

The former England star played a vital role for South Africa and was also part of the broadcasting team for the recently concluded final.
