Marnus Labuschagne collectively accrued just 39 runs across both innings of the WTC 2025 final against South Africa at Lord’s in London earlier this week. Labuschagne’s latest set of failures sustained a worrying trend of his underwhelming returns with the bat, further amplifying concerns over his diminishing impact in pivotal Tests.
Australian head coach Andrew McDonald has now hinted out a possibility of Labuschagne getting dropped from the national team ahead of this year’s home Ashes.
Marnus Labuschagne Will Be Disappointed, Claims Coach
Australian head coach Andrew McDonald has hinted out a possibility of dropping Marnus Labuschagne from the national Test XI by giving a mixed response over the cricketer’s recent form. As quoted by ESPNCricinfo, McDonald said:
“Anyone that averages 45, 46 in Test cricket at that age is important. We’ve got older players there that are closer to the end than the start. We’ve got some younger players that are coming in. If he can get his game in good order for the next four or five years, he can underpin that batting order. But at the moment, he’d be disappointed with the returns.”
McDonald, however, also expressed his confidence in Marnus Labuschagne for making a strong comeback with the bat. He added:
“He’s missed out on big scores. But we’re confident that he could return to his best, and hence why we keep picking him. And at what point do we stop picking him? I think most players across their journey get dropped at some point in time. I think he had a positive week here where he worked on the right things and had a great prep. There’s no harder worker than Marnus. Now it’s really just about the returns. And at the moment, as I said, he’d be disappointed.”
It is worth noting that Marnus Labuschagne aggregated just 974 runs from 38 innings of the WTC 2023-25 cycle at a below par average of 27.82. Labuschagne’s lacklustre run in the past two years has even prompted his once prolific average of 56.73 to drop to 46.19.
At the moment, the right-handed top-order batter is slated to tour West Indies as part of the Australian team for a three-match Test series. The series opener will be hosted by the Kensington Oval in Barbados on June 25.
