Kaif speaks on Rohit's credentials [Source: AFP Photo]
Mohammad Kaif, former India batter thinks that it would be difficult for the selectors to assess Rohit Sharma in the upcoming Australia tour. Kaif explained on his YouTube channel by citing the kind of innings Rohit has played throughout his career.
Mohammad Kaif said that Rohit Sharma’s inconsistency with the bat would make it difficult for the selectors to gauge the hitman. Rohit Sharma, one of the finest white-ball captains, lifted the T20 World Cup 2024 and the Champions Trophy recently. Prior to that Rohit took the side to the final of the ODI World Cup 2023 with his brilliant leadership. After retiring from the T20I and Test cricket, he continues to represent India in the One Day Internationals.
Kaif explains the difference between Kohli and Rohit
Since Shubman Gill will be leading India in the ODI series against Australia, Kaif opined that it would not be easy for the selectors to assess Rohit based on pure batting. He explained,
“People are saying that Virat Kohli will be assessed, but I think that is something which will apply to Rohit Sharma. Rohit is not captaining, and the way he has been playing over the years, scoring 20 to 30, but when a big match comes, he scores 80, a match-winning knock, that’s how his career has gone. He never scores consistently.”
On his YouTube channel, Mohammad Kaif also reminded how Rohit despite the ‘inconsistency’ in the Champions Trophy, went on to become the Player of the Match in the final.
“The difference between him and Kohli in their numbers is that Kohli brings consistency, while Rohit brings match-winning innings and knocks. It will be difficult for the selectors. What if Rohit fails in the Australia series? People will say he is out of form, but if you look at his career, he often fails in two or three innings and then comes back strong. Even in the Champions Trophy, he scored 30 to 40 in the early games and then became the Player of the Match in the final.”
India need experience in World Cup: Kaif
While many expected India to play the upcoming ODI World Cup 2027 under Rohit’s captaincy, the selectors gave a hint by moving on to a new ODI captain for the forthcoming Australia tour. Shubman Gill, the young skipper will get enough time to adapt to the set up before the next World Cup.
Rohit may not lead the side but according to Kaif, it would be vital for India to keep the duo in the side. The experience the duo brought would be beneficial for India in the tournament.
