Shubman Gill is set to lead India in One Day Internationals in the upcoming series against Australia. Gill’s appointment as the new ODI captain of India replacing Rohit Sharma has ignited different opinions. While some are not happy, some are welcoming the change.

New era begins under ODI captain Shubman Gill

After leading the Indian cricket team brilliantly in 2023 ODI World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy, Rohit Sharma was expected to continue his tenure as the ODI captain. However, BCCI took a bold step by making Shubman Gill the captain for the upcoming ODI series against Australia. Rohit Sharma has led India in 56 ODIs securing 42 wins and losing 12 matches with one tie and one no-result.

One of the most successful leaders of white-ball cricket, Rohit Sharma retired from the other two formats of the game already. After losing the 2023 ODI World Cup final to Australia, it has been dreams of many to see Rohit lift the same for India in 2027. But Gill replacing Rohit as the new young captain of the side in ODI format hints at the beginning of a new era.

Robin Uthappa excited to see Gill's captaincy in ODI

Former India cricketer Robin Uthappa shared his excitement about the new ODI captain of Indian cricket team on his YouTube channel.

“It will be interesting to see what kind of approach he takes to ODI cricket right now. What are the norms or standards that Shubman Gill sets for the ODI side. What brand of cricket do they wanna play, and I think there’ll be a slight adjustment there, especially with Rohit at the top with Shubman."

Uthappa feels that this opportunity will help the young leader Shubman Gill to get accustomed with the set up. Former India opener is keen to experience the new era and the kind of approach Gill takes in handling the new job.

"It also gives Shubman to kind of get into that space and kind of find himself, as far as the captain is concerned of this format as well. So, pretty interesting to see, I am looking forward to that Australia series.”

Meanwhile, after a remarkable start to his captaincy in red-ball cricket during the England tour, Gill is getting ready for the new responsibilities. India will take on Australia for a three-match ODI series starting on October 19.
