As we approach the T20 World Cup 2024, team India is still looking to find appropriate combinations in the shortest format. Considering Jitesh Sharma and Sanju Samson are given opportunities ahead of KL Rahul in the upcoming series against Afghanistan, Sunil Gavaskar opines on playing Rishabh Pant ahead of other keeper-batters in the forthcoming T20 World Cup.
Former Indian cricketer and World Cup winner Sunil Gavaskar expresses his affinity for Pant and wants him to play for India even if he is fit on one leg.
On the other hand, he also believes that KL Rahul has significantly improved as a player, whether it's his batting or keeping.
If Pant is fit, he should come in- Gavaskar on Rishabh Pant
"I see him (Rahul) as a wicketkeeper as well but I will say one thing before that - if Rishabh Pant is fit on even one leg, he should come in the team because he is a game-changer in every format. If I am the selector, I will put his name first," Gavaskar said.
"However, if Rishabh Pant is unavailable and KL Rahul keeps wickets, it will be good because the balance will also get created. Then you have the option to play him as an opener or use him in the middle order as a finisher at No. 5 or No. 6," he added.
Gavaskar also shed light on the possible combinations India can opt for if Rishabh Pant is not fit by playing Rahul at the top or even using him as a finisher down the order.
Rishabh Pant, who is still recovering from the shocking road accident, is expected to be fit enough to play in the upcoming season of the IPL. The southpaw undoubtedly has been a game-changer for the Indian team in the last few years in all formats of the game.
