Punjab Kings upstaged Mumbai Indians by seven wickets with more than an over to spare in match 69 of the IPL 2025. Chasing 185 for a win at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, firebrand opener Priyansh Arya and Australian stumper Josh Inglis unleashed majestic half-centuries to lead Punjab’s response.
The outcome also helped Punjab Kings secure a guaranteed top two finish on the points table, as Shreyas Iyer and co. concluded their league stage in style.
Shreyas Iyer hails team effort, dressing room environment
While speaking during the post-match presentation ceremony, Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer complimented his group for putting up a complete team performance this season. The cricketer also claimed that his team’s mindset has been about winning matches, regardless of the situation. He said:
“I personally feel that every single individual has stepped up for us at the right time. Starting from game one, we have been in that mindset that we have to win no matter what the situation. We have had players putting their hands up when we were in the dumps. Kudos to everyone for the contribution.”
Shreyas Iyer also praised head coach Ricky Ponting for his player management skills. The charismatic Indian batter added that as a captain, it was important for him to gain trust with every individual of the team. He added:
“Obviously, Ricky Ponting has been fantastic with player management. It is important for me to get trust, too. It was about gaining the trust of every individual. And that happened by winning matches, and I personally feel we need to maintain that relationship throughout. I had conversations with them, too. I feel the dressing room has been top-notch throughout. When you are down in the dumps, it is easy to backstab each other.”
It is worth noting that Punjab Kings made it to the playoffs for the first time of an IPL season since 2014.
Punjab Kings, under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, will now face either RCB or Gujarat Titans in the first qualifier of the IPL 2025 season on May 29 in Mullanpur. The loser of the match will get another crack at the finals in the form of the second qualifier on June 1.
