KKR Insults Shreyas Iyer; Omits Him From 1 Year Title Anniversary Celebration

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captured their 3rd Indian Premier League (IPL) title last season when they defeated the Sunrisers Hyderabad in a one-sided finale. In that 2024 season, everyone contributed as the entire side exceeded expectations and regained the title.

While the likes of Andre Russell, Sunil Narine and others get the accolades for delivering the goods, one player who often gets neglected is their title-winning captain, Shreyas Iyer. Iyer was the leader of the team as they dominated the tournament right from match one.

How did KKR insult Iyer?

However, post the title winning campaign, Iyer was released ahead of mega auction and the batter was purchased by Punjab Kings.

Today, May 26 is the anniversary of KKR's title winning day. On this day last year, they defeated SRH to win the league and in memory of it, the franchise posted a picture of almost the entire squad alongside the IPL title. However, what angered everyone was that Iyer was missing from the picture. Despite delivering as the captain, KKR failed to acknowledge him and decided omit him.

Interestingly, all the players who were a part of the winning team, but got released (Starc, Salt) were also excluded from the post.

Why Shreyas Iyer was released despite winning the league?

As per reports, after winning the IPL title, Iyer asked for a pay raise, which didn't go well with the franchise. KKR did offer him certain amount of money to be retained, but reportedly, Iyer rejected it and KKR had no choice but to release him.

PBKS saw this as an opportunity and drafted him in their squad for 2025 season and also made him their new captain as he led them to the playoffs.
