"Easily Had India 30/3" Chris Woakes Backs DRS Change After Frustrating Calls In Edgbaston

England fast bowler Chris Woakes has called for a change in the DRS after a frustrating day on the field during the second Test against India at Edgbaston. Woakes bowled an excellent spell with the new ball on Day 1 but was left disappointed after two very close LBW appeals were turned down due to "umpire’s call."

The most frustrating moment came when Karun Nair left a ball that was clearly heading toward the stumps. Although England reviewed the on-field "not out" decision, the ball was just clipping the stumps, and Nair was saved by the umpire’s call.

Chris Woakes Suggests Key Change In DRS Rule

According to Chris Woakes, the Decision Review System (DRS) has been a good technical tool. However, he feels that if a batter chooses not to play a shot and the ball is hitting the stumps, even marginally, it should be given out.

"In general, DRS has been good for the game. A lot more right decisions are given [than before]. The only thing I would like to come in is that if a batsman decides to leave the ball and it's still hitting the stumps, I think that should be out - regardless if it's clipping or not,” Woakes told reporters (via Cricket.com).

Woakes admitted he was very frustrated before lunch as India survived multiple close calls. He felt England could have reduced India to 30/3 in the first hour, which could have changed the course of the match.

"We could have easily had them 30 for 3. It was a pretty frustrating morning, really. Obviously emotions run high when you are desperate to do well for the team, do well for yourself and it would've been nice... had those decisions gone our way, the day looks completely different, but that is Test cricket and we move on," he added.

At stumps on day 1, India had 310 runs on the board at the loss of 5 wickets. Shubman Gill is unbeaten on 114, and Ravindra Jadeja is supporting him at 41.

Woakes Caught Swearing After DRS Calls Went Against Him

England pacer Chris Woakes was visibly frustrated on Day 1 of the second Test against India at Edgbaston after two close LBW appeals, against Yashasvi Jaiswal and Karun Nair, were turned down due to umpire’s call in DRS.

Both reviews showed the ball just clipping the stumps, but the original not-out decisions stood. Caught on the big screen, Woakes muttered “That’s a f*****g joke,” revealing rare emotion from the usually composed cricketer. Despite bowling a brilliant spell, Woakes had just one wicket to show for his efforts, as India ended the day on 310/5.
