‘Dropped Catches Hurt Us…’ - GT Skipper Shubman Gill After Defeat To Punjab Kings

Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill rued team’s fielding lapses after they slumped to a last-over defeat to Punjab Kings in match number 17 of the IPL 2024 season.

The dashing opening batter himself belted an imperial 48-ball 89* in the game to take his team to a monumental 199-4. Despite posing a daunting target upfront at home, Gujarat Titans bowlers failed to defend the same courtesy of Shashank Singh’s blistering 29-ball 61*.

After the match, Shubman Gill claimed that his team lost its grip over the contest after the first 15 overs of the Punjab Kings innings, and also defended his decision of giving the ball to Darshan Nalkande for the decisive over of the match.

Shubman Gill blames dropped catches for defeat

Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill cited dropped catches and dew factor as reasons behind team’s defeat to Punjab Kings in their high-scoring thriller at Ahmedabad. While speaking during the post-match presentation ceremony, the 24-year-old said:

“I think dropped catches hurt us. Our bowlers did a pretty decent job. With dew, it's always difficult to defend. I don't think (we were 20 runs short). The new ball was doing something. There're always areas to improve. I think 199 was a good enough total. We were in the game till the 15th over. Can't put down catches.”

Shubman Gill also defended his decision of giving the ball to Darshan Nalkande for the final over of the match, at a time when Punjab Kings needed just seven more runs for a win.

The Titans skipper praised the young speedster for his performance against SRH in the previous game, describing him as an obvious choice for the decisive moment of the game.

“It was kind of a no-brainer to go with Darshan (Nalkande). The way he bowled in the previous match (against Sunrisers Hyderabad), Nalkande was the obvious choice. This is IPL for you. There'll always be cricketers who'll come and win games. That's the beauty of this tournament," he added.

Shubman Gill will now lead the Gujarat Titans in match number 21 of the tournament against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). The much-awaited contest will be staged at the Ekana International Stadium in Lucknow on April 7.
