Pakistan’s crushing defeat against India in the Asia Cup 2025 has left former captain Shahid Afridi furious, and this time, his anger was aimed not just at the PCB but also at his own son-in-law, Shaheen Afridi.
India beat Pakistan by 7 wickets after chasing a nominal total of 128 runs in 15.5 overs. The men in green failed to pose any significant challenge throughout the game, leaving former players and critics fuming.
Shahid Afridi Explodes At Shaheen For Wicketless Spell Vs India
Meanwhile, former Pakistan cricketer Shahid Afridi, talking to Samaa TV, targeted his own son-in-law, Shaheen Afridi, for his poor spell against India, where he conceded 23 runs in 2 overs without a wicket.
Despite Shaheen’s quickfire 33 runs with the bat, Shahid made it clear that he wasn’t impressed, insisting that his son-in-law must deliver with the ball, not the bat.
"Thankfully, Shaheen scored some runs, which helped our team to go past the 100-run mark. But I don't want runs from Shaheen, I want bowling from Shaheen, I don't want bowling from Sam Ayub, I want runs from him," Shahid said.
Afridi further explained that Shaheen’s strength lies in swinging the ball early and breaking partnerships at the start. He urged him to sharpen his bowling skills and use psychological tactics to unsettle opposition batters.
"Shaheen should understand that his role is to swing the new ball and he should know how to take wickets by moving the ball forward. He should focus on his game plan. Shaheen should play mind games, he can take wickets in the beginning. I would like him to win the match for Pakistan with his bowling," he added.
Shahid Afridi Calls Pakistan Cricket ‘Third Class’
The former Pakistan captain didn’t stop there. Shahid Afridi launched a scathing attack on the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the state of domestic cricket in Pakistan, calling it “third class”. He blamed the weak system for producing players who struggle at the international level.
"You need to better the domestic system in Pakistan, invest money, bring qualified coaches, and help players develop a progressive mindset that can cope with the demands of the game. I am tired of asking the PCB to do this, I am requesting once again. Please focus on domestic cricket. Just do one favour to Pakistan, make their domestic system strong."
Meanwhile, Pakistan will face the UAE on September 17 in a virtual knockout contest. If somehow the UAE end up producing an upset, the men in green will be knocked out of the Asia Cup 2025.
