Pakistan threatens ICC To Boycott Asia Cup 2025 [Source: AFP]
The handshake controversy at the Asia Cup 2025 is quickly turning into a major drama. It all started when Indian team refused to shake hands with the Pakistan players after their group-stage match in Dubai. Because of this, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is now very upset and has even threatened to boycott the entire T20 tournament.
The PCB wants match referee Andy Pycroft removed, as they believe he stopped Pakistan’s captain Salman Ali Agha from shaking hands with Suryakumar Yadav during the toss. On the other hand, the International Cricket Council (ICC) thinks Pycroft was only trying to avoid an awkward scene and has no plans to remove him. This difference in opinion has created a deadlock.
Now, here’s where things could get serious. Since the ICC is not accepting PCB’s demand, Pakistan have warned that they may refuse to play its next match against the UAE on Thursday at Dubai International Stadium, as per the reports from Cricbuzz. But if Pakistan actually skip that game, the consequences will be harsh.
The Big Consequences Of Boycotting Their Asia Cup Clash Against UAE
To begin with, boycotting the match would mean Pakistan are automatically eliminated from the Asia Cup tournament. At the moment, Pakistan are currently second in Group A points table with one win out of two games. If they don’t show up against the UAE, the UAE would be awarded the win and move forward to the Super 4 stage alongside India, since India have already qualified.
Moreover, the points table makes the situation even tighter. UAE recently beat Oman, which gave them the same points as Pakistan. Therefore, if Pakistan forfeit the match, UAE will jump ahead and Pakistan will be out of the competition entirely.
