With Pakistan posting just 127 runs on the board, the Men in Green needed their best weapon, Shaheen Afridi, to deliver the goods in the power-play, but Abhishek Sharma, the Indian opener, gave him a reality check with brute-hitting to take his confidence down in the Asia Cup 2025 match in Dubai.

The match-up between Shaheen and Abhishek was the one to watch out for, and the Indian opener won the contest in a one-sided battle. The carnage started in the first over of the Indian innings, as Abhishek started off with a boundary of the first ball, and followed it up with a gigantic six to shatter Shaheen Afridi’s confidence.

If that was not enough, Abhishek had more in store for Pakistan’s premium pacer in his second over. Again, the first ball was dispatched for a boundary, but the best was yet to come as the southpaw launched a gigantic six over the deep mid-wicket region. This brought Shaheen to his knees as Abhishek scored 22 runs vs the left-armer and helped India get a quick start.

Abhishek instrumental in India's success so far

In India’s first match of the Asia Cup 2025, India needed a paltry 58 to win the match, and Abhishek finished things quickly as he slammed 30 off 16 balls and made light work of the UAE bowling attack. He was expected to struggle against a quality Pakistan attack, but he rose to the occasion and slammed 31 off 13 balls and steered India to a strong start.

Gautam Gambhir expects his team to play an attacking brand of cricket, and Abhishek is certainly the pioneer of it for the Men in Blue.
