Zimbabwe crashed out of the 2024 T20 World Cup race after falling short of Uganda and Namibia in the African Region Qualifiers. Under Sikandar Raza’s spirited leadership, Zimbabwe registered four emphatic wins out of their six league fixtures, however, defeats at the hands of Uganda and hosts Namibia ensured that they will finish below the two sides on the points table.

After Uganda defeated Rwanda with nearly 12 overs to spare to seal Zimbabwe’s fate in the tournament, a visibly distraught Raza said that he is not sure about the future of Zimbabwe cricket going ahead.

Distraught Sikandar Raza speaks after Zimbabwe exit

Zimbabwe, having surprised one-and-all by defeating Pakistan at the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, have been eliminated for the race of next year’s T20 tournament in West Indies.

Under Sikandar Raza’s leadership, the Chevrons failed to go past Uganda and Namibia in the African Region Qualifiers.

Following their exit, Zimbabwe captain Raza, visibly distraught, said:

“I don’t know what will happen when we get home.”

Prior to the ongoing T20 World Cup African Region Qualifiers, Zimbabwe engaged in a five-match away T20I series against Namibia. In spite of Raza’s ‘Player of the Series’ performance, his team lost the series by a 3-2 margin to the hosts.

Earlier this year, Zimbabwe cricket team also narrowly failed to qualify for the 2023 World Cup in India. Hosting the 2023 World Cup Qualifiers in front of their home crowd, the team failed to go past Netherlands and Scotland in their race for securing a spot in the finals with Sri Lanka.
