'Don't Forget, Pujara Is Waiting'- Ravi Shastri Warns Shubman Gill After Failure vs ENG

India’s former cricketer and head coach, Ravi Shastri issues a stern warning to Shubman Gill following the latter’s dismissal on day 1 of the second Test match against England on Friday.

Coming in at number three, Shubman Gill looked in great touch during his 34-run knock off 46 balls. He hit five sumptuous boundaries and it looked like the Gujarat Titans batter would go on to play a big impactful knock.

However, Gill, once again, failed to convert the start into a big score. His poor form in Test cricket is hurting India badly. The team management has backed him to bat at the number three spot but his recent returns don’t inspire a lot of confidence.

He has scored four fifties and two centuries as an opener but hasn’t been able to score a single 50 since taking the number three position. He has accumulated 223 runs in his last 10 innings at an average of 22.

Following Gill’s dismissal in the second Test, Ravi Shastri cautioned him that Cheteshwar Pujara, who has shown great form in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season, is also waiting to take his number three position back.

Here’s what he said during the commentary

“It's a fresh side, a young side. These youngsters have to prove themselves. Don't forget, Pujara is waiting. He is grinding it out at the Ranji Trophy and is always on the radar.”

Shubman Gill had a pretty ordinary outing in the first Test match in Hyderabad. He returned with scores of 23 and 0 in his two innings. Following his dismissal, Gill received a lot of flak for his under-par performances.

However, India’s batting coach was quite optimistic and backed him to score runs in the upcoming matches.

“Cricket has changed. We can see that in the way it is being played around the world. The runs are being scored quickly, at better strike rates. Batters are taking more chances. We also need to be a little patient with the young batters, who haven’t played too much Test cricket. Gill, Jaiswal, Shreyas – eventually they will start getting big runs,” Rathour said during a press conference on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, India managed to score 336 runs at stumps on day 1 of the second Test match, courtesy of a sensational unbeaten knock of 179 runs from Yashasvi Jaiswal.
