The return of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in ODIs wasn't impressive as they were dismissed on a duck and eight runs, respectively. India went on to lose the match against Australia by seven wickets. The batting line-up failed to score runs, especially the top order, leading to such a disappointing loss.
Despite the loss, former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar backed Kohli and Rohit for the upcoming match. After eight months, the players are back in the ODI set-up, hoping to perform and book a seat for the ODI World Cup 2027.
Sunil Gavaskar supports Kohli, Rohit
The next match against Australia is in Adelaide, where the pitches are most likely to favor the batters. Gavaskar emphasized the Perth pitch and gave a detailed explanation for the legendary duo's failure in the first match. However, the former player has shown confidence in Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for the next game.
"They were playing on probably the bounciest pitch in Australia. It wasn't going to be easy, especially for players who haven't played international cricket for a couple of months. It was challenging for Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, who usually play international cricket quite regularly," said Sunil Gavaskar on India Today.
India are still a very, very good team: Sunil Gavaskar
Sunil Gavaskar also spoke about the Indian team and how they have been in the past. He has urged everyone to trust the process and wait for the next match. As per his predictions, India are likely to score more than 300 runs in the 2nd game.
"India are still a very, very good team. They have won the Champions Trophy. Don't be surprised if Rohit and Kohli score big in the next two games. They are coming back after a few months away from international cricket. The more they play, the more they spend time in the nets, the more throwdowns they get, maybe even from the reserve bowlers bowling at them from 20 years instead of 22, the quicker they will find their rhythm. Once they are back among the runs, India's total will be 300, 300-plus," he added.
The next game will be extremely crucial for both Rohit and Kohli since the ODI World Cup 2027 is coming up. India will play against Australia in the second match on October 23 in Adelaide. It will be interesting to see if the visitors can equal the series in the next match.
