Former New Zealand cricketer Gavin Larsen has been appointed as the new selection manager of the New Zealand cricket men's team. After Sam Wells' departure, Larsen will take over the role on November 3.

Gavin Larsen becomes New Zealand men's teams' selection manager for 2nd time

Gavin Larsen will be responsible for selecting teams for the men's senior team, New Zealand XI tours, and New Zealand A. The former Kiwi pacer reacted to his new role, saying he will play a part in continuing New Zealand cricket's success. It would be interesting to see his stance, especially ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026.

"I feel absolutely honoured to be stepping back into the BlackCaps and the national high-performance environment. I'm hugely passionate about cricket in this country, and to be given another opportunity to contribute at the highest level is really exciting. I can't wait to get started this summer and hopefully help play a part in continuing the success of the BlackCaps," Larsen said.

Gavin Larsen's previous stints

Gavin Larsen was once a renowned fast bowler of his time. He appeared in 121 ODIs for New Zealand and took 113 wickets. He was also featured in 8 Test matches, picking up 24 wickets. Honestly, the numbers don't do justice to his talent. He was one of the very few pacers who used to trouble the batters to settle down.

After hanging up his boots from professional cricket, Larson became the chief executive of Cricket Wellington and the cricket operations manager, ahead of the 2015 ODI World Cup. He then became the selection manager of the New Zealand cricket team, a role he held from 2015 to 2023, before being appointed as the performance director at Warwickshire County Cricket Club. However, later, he decided to return to New Zealand and took on the role of commercial manager for the Nelson Giants basketball team.

And now he's back again as the selection manager of the New Zealand men's cricket team. Larson carries a lot of experience in handling such responsibilities. So it can be said that the Blackcaps are likely to have better-balanced and well-selected teams for the upcoming and crucial matches.
