Smriti Mandhana was caught in a very distraught mood when India was defeated by England by merely 4 runs during the Women's World Cup 2025. She also admitted that her dismissal triggered the batting collapse that cost India the match.

India seemed in complete control of the 289-run chase, needing just 57 runs from 57 balls with seven wickets in hand.

Mandhana, who was batting beautifully on 88 from 94 balls, looked set to guide India home. However, her dismissal in the 42nd over changed everything.

Trying to go over the covers against left-arm spinner Linsey Smith, Smriti Mandhana mistimed her shot and was caught at long-off. That wicket sparked a collapse, and India crumbled to 262/6 by the 47th over.

Despite having wickets in hand and a run-a-ball equation, the middle and lower order couldn’t find the finishing touch as England’s spinners Sophie Ecclestone and Smith bowled tight, pressure-filled overs at the death.

India fell short by 4 runs, losing their third encounter in the ICC Women's World Cup 2025. Soon after the heart-wrenching defeat, Smriti Mandhana was seen with tears brimming in her eyes as emotions took a toll on her.

Even in post-match interviews, she took the blame on herself, saying the shot selection could’ve been better from her end.

This has been a mixed tournament for Mandhana as a specialist batter. In 5 games, she scored 222 runs with a 44.40 average and 2 fifties.

With the defeat, England secured their spot in the semi-finals, while India’s campaign took a massive blow.

Next, the women in blue will face New Zealand in a do-or-die game on October 23 at the DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai.
