India's star batter Abhishek Sharma is in the form of his life, scoring the most runs in the ongoing Asia Cup 2025, that too at a strike rate of 200+. Making his debut for the Indian team in 2024, Sharma soon became a vital cog for the national side in the shortest format of the game. Notably, Sharma's invincible form is a result of relentless hard work, self believe and ever important guidance from his mentor Yuvraj Singh.
During India's latest match against Bangladesh, the southpaw scored a 25-ball fifty, for the fifth time in his career. With this feat, Sharma surpassed former Indian lefty-batter who had done the same for four times in his time at the highest level.
'I see a similarity between Yuvraj and Abhi': Abhishek Sharma SRH coach
Well them being lefty and hailing from Punjab isn't the only similarity between the two Punjab batters. Sunrisers Hyderabad's assistant coach, Simon Helmot, in a conversation with the Indian Express, opened up about the common methodology in practice of the mentor-mentee duo.
Helmot, who has been working with Abhishek Sharma since 2019, in the SRH set up has also worked with the India legend Yuvraj Singh. Sitting in a perfect position to analyse the similarity between the two, Helmot said,
“I had the benefit of working with Yuvraj for a couple of years, especially in 2016. And one thing I was always impressed with Yuvraj was whenever I threw balls to him, how little he would try and still hit them for four or six. He was always about making sure he presented a full bat face, and was hitting the ball cleanly. Often, you’d throw balls to Yuvraj, and he would just be playing at what I’d call a tempo 1 or a tempo 2. A drop and run or a punch. In a game situation, Yuvraj could clear the rope as easily as anybody.”
While talking about Abhishek Sharma's way of going by, the Australian emphasised on the commonality he noticed. Simon noted that both of the two lefty batters have the ability to hit sixes without trying too much.
“I see a similarity with Abhi. He doesn’t try to overhit or overplay in training. I just see that he wants to hit the ball cleanly. Consistently. Putting himself in good positions so he can play any particular delivery that’s put in front of him. That’s where I see a similarity between Yuvraj and Abhi in approach.”
Yuvraj Singh opines on his relationship with Sharma
On top of that, in an interview, talking about the young gun, Yuvraj Singh opened about his relationship with him as mentor. Singh said, “He reminds me a lot of myself, some of the pull shots and back-foot hits. I felt I was very much like him”.
Safe to say, the resemblance between the two hard-hitters is uncanny and Indian fans are loving the duo for the same. Moreover, for his recent form, Abhishek has earned praise from one and all.
For the unversed, arch-rivals India and Pakistan have already reached the final of Asia Cup 2025. The ultimate battle scheduled for September 28, 2025, is going to be a fan-fest considering the controversy surrounding the two nations in the continental tournament.
