The Senior Selection Committee of Mumbai Cricket Association has revealed a 24-member list of probables for the upcoming 2025-26 Ranji season. Shardul Thakur has been appointed the captain of the side, while the list includes the former leader, Ajinkya Rahane, as well.
Shreyas Iyer excluded after his break from red-ball cricket
Shreyas Iyer, though, has missed out after he asked for a six-month break from red-ball cricket, citing fitness concerns. Yashasvi Jaiswal, too, has not been named in the list, but there is a note stating that players on national duty will be included as per their availability. It means that Yashasvi Jaiswal might still play for Mumbai in the upcoming Ranji season whenever he is available. However, according to reports, Jaiswal initially planned to move to Goa but later decided to stay back in Mumbai.
Overall, the squad includes plenty of young cricketers like Ayush Mhatre, Musheer Khan, and Angkirsh Raghuvanshi who have done well for Mumbai in the last year or so. The familiar names in the batting department, like Sarfaraz Khan and Siddhesh Lad, are also part of the 24-member squad, while on the bowling front, Tushar Deshpande is back.
The spin department would be manned by the experienced Shams Mulani and prolific Tanush Kotian. Akash Anand, Hardik Tamore and Prasad Pawar are the three wicketkeepers in the squad, and Mumbai would be looking to make a strong comeback after the disappointment of the previous season.
Mumbai start new era under Shardul Thakur
Ajinkya Rahane relinquished the leadership role after the last domestic season. He led Mumbai to the Ranji title in the 2023-24 season and would continue to play the leadership role under Shardul Thakur with plenty of youngsters around.
Mumbai will start off their Ranji Trophy 2025-26 campaign with a clash against Jammu and Kashmir in Srinagar.
