The 2025 IPL season has given many exciting young talents, and one of the brightest stars is 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre from Chennai Super Kings. However, despite his 94-run knock against RCB, his father has advised him not to copy someone like Vaibhav Suryavanshi.

Signed as a replacement for the injured Ruturaj Gaikwad, Mhatre didn’t take long to make headlines. In a match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Chepauk, he smashed 94 runs off just 48 balls, hitting 9 fours and 5 sixes.

Even though CSK lost the match by 2 runs, Mhatre’s performance stood out. He built a solid partnership of 114 runs with Ravindra Jadeja.

Ayush Mhatre’s Father Warns Him Of Unrealistic Expectations

Despite a powerful knock, Ayush Mhatre’s father, Yogesh, has warned his son to be thick-skinned and not try to emulate anyone else’s journey, especially 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi. The kid scored a century for RR this year, but Yogesh Mhatre wants his son, Ayush, to write his own path.

"I've told Ayush that he and Vaibhav are two very different batsmen and that if someone compares him with Vaibhav, he should not keep that in mind. I have also told him not to try to imitate Vaibhav or look to score a century like him. I believe there is absolutely no need for Ayush to take any pressure upon himself and try to do big things. He has a long way to go," Yogesh told Mid-Day.

After the match, Ayush had a special moment with MS Dhoni. His father revealed that Dhoni told the kid to keep performing well like this in the future. For Ayush, those few words from his idol meant the world.

"Ayush was happy with his innings, but wanted to win the game as CSK were very close to beating RCB. But after the game, Ayush had an interaction with the legendary Dhoni, and was extremely thrilled. Dhoni calmly said to Ayush, 'Well played. Aage isi tarah achha karte rehna hai.' It may have been just a few words but, coming from Dhoni, who Ayush respects immensely, the words mean a lot. It felt that Dhoni was showing belief in Ayush's ability by entrusting him with an important responsibility going forward."

Mhatre has been the backbone of CSK’s batting lineup as stars such as Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway, Shivam Dube, and Deepak Hooda are failing consistently. At just 17, he has made a big name for himself and could shape the future of Chennai with the right guidance and backing around.
